ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marsh Chambers has been a lifelong woodworker in the village of Sconset. He has been creating lightship furniture for over 3 decades and has recently decided to pursue it fulltime.  Combining his skills of woodworking and basket weaving, Chambers creates one of a kind pieces that evoke a traditional feel of Nantucket.

At age 20, Chambers had the incredible good fortune to be hired and mentored by local builder Ben Murphy who taught him an unwavering standard of excellence where everything had to be done right.

Through the years he has collaborated on many houses from start to finish. It was pretty clear in the early stages that Chambers excelled at the 'finish work' and became known for his final touches and outstanding attention to detail.

There was a brief period of time when Marsh thought maybe he'd just make kitchen cabinets. We are all very glad he didn't.

Lightship Baskets are synonymous with Nantucket and her rich history. Known for years as the "Nantucket Mink" a custom purse can command a high price as it has always been known as a status symbol of sorts.

An old story goes something like this..." I was in the airport in Singapore when I spotted a woman with a Lightship Basket. I complimented her on the beautiful purse and said rhetorically you must be from Nantucket." She replied "Sconset actually"
